The proliferation of solar panel systems has exploded in the last decade. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), since the Solar Investment Tax Credit was passed in 2006 the solar industry has experienced a compounded annual growth rate of nearly 60% (1). As improved technology produces higher efficiency panels, increased storage capacity and better transmission capabilities more and more consumers, both residential and commercial are getting on board. The cost to install solar has dropped over 70% in the same time-frame and creative finance options and tax credits will fuel continued growth. Suffice it to say that solar energy is here to stay and is literally a “hot topic”.
The downside of all That Energy
Which brings me to my point…while basking in the glow of all that “free” energy, keep in mind that sun is producing heat gain in your house. To mitigate the heat gain and reduce your cooling costs you could eliminate all your windows and build underground but frankly the view isn’t very good and who wants to live like a gopher. Or, you can shade the southern and western exposure to minimize the heat gain while producing a cool, comfortable, outdoor living space. Studies show you can reduce your air conditioning bill on average 10% by installing a shade device.(2) These same studies indicate that interior window treatments do not reduce heat gain nearly as much as exterior shade since the heat has already penetrated the home. At the end of the day (literally) the more sun you allow into your home, the hotter it gets, the more you need to run your air conditioner to maintain a comfortable temperature – simple. We also know those UV rays are not doing any favors to your furniture, artwork, carpet/floors or rugs. The added bonus of an exterior shade solution is the benefit of creating a cool, intimate, outdoor living space. And, ask anyone that’s encountered skin cancer and they will share how much they appreciate a shaded patio or deck.
Shade Systems to the Rescue
There are many compelling reasons for shading your home. Add in a retractable shade feature and now you’ve really enhanced your solar energy system by allowing sun/warmth in when you prefer (think winter). And, while it may seem far-fetched, there is actual research showing the capability of harvesting Lunar Power. (3) This seems like science fiction at his point but, let’s not dismiss the power of the moon for creating romantic energy. Have you ever sat under a full moon and a sky illuminated by bright stars? It’s almost like having a free art installation that stretches your imagination. I can’t site any studies but it wouldn’t surprise me if the moon’s rays trigger elevated pheromones.
While California has led the nation into the “Solar Energy Age” the rest of the country is catching on.
Texas, Arizona, Massachusetts, North Carolina and a host of other states are recognizing and implementing aggressive solar power initiatives designed to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and harvest this vast energy source. As we gain more knowledge and experience with this glorious wealth of energy we adopt new and innovative ways to harness this great power. As conscientious consumers we are also learning how NOT to waste our resources and deploying a robust, dynamic shade solution is a responsible and aesthetically pleasing way to conserve our solar energy.
